ABOUT ME

I’ve been teaching Hungarian to non-Hungarians for many years and my work as a teacher has taught me a lot about other cultures. I’ve also worked as a lecturer at the University of Poznań in Poland and, beacause my work involves understanding Polish culture, I was once asked to write the food section of a Budapest travel guide which was published in Polish. As a result, I had to get to know the different restaurants, markets and foods of Budapest. This process led me to the idea of this particular project: helping non-Hungarians learn about Hungarian language and cuisine at the same time, an idea which actually became reality when we ran our first course in 2010.

For our new course this year, it’s time to get out our pots and pans, our recipe books and cooking magazines once again. As well as making “gulyas” (which is not really the same as what you call “goulash”!), amongst a range of other dishes, we will look at those expressions which are vital for shopping in the market and surviving an afternoon in the coffee-shop. We can also discuss what’s on in Budapest, including concerts and events. Alternatively, we can chat about how you, as non-Hungarians, see us and what you think of us!

Mixing and stirring all these ’ingredients’ together is always a great experience for me, as no two courses are ever the same. I hope this gastro-lingo-cultural adventure will be just as fun and exciting for you too.
